More and more people are going back to using handmade bars of soap. They are mild and moisturizing to the skin and very little packaging (if any) is used and this makes soap even more eco-friendly.


Making your own soap bar
* Step 1 – prepare the equipment you will need.
  • Microwave
  • A melting jug
  • Ice cream sticks
  • Coloring (if using powdered coloring, prepare a scoop)
  • Plastic pipettes
  • Essential oil
  • Soap mold
* Step 2 - Melt and Pour soap is already reasonably soft, so it doesn't take long to melt in a microwave. Set the microwave for short spells – depending on the amount of M&P soap you are wanting to melt, set it for 30 second or 2 minute intervals (you want to melt it, not boil it!). If you are using shea butter or cocoa butter in your soaps, melt it together with the M&P soap base.

* Step 3 - Color is to be added at this stage. You can use either food coloring, mica powder or natural food coloring.

* Step 4 – Add your essential oil. The ratio can vary according to the potency of the oils and the desired end product (the essential oils being the strongest). We recommend that you try about 1 tablespoon (20ml) per 500g of melt and pour soap.

* Step 5 - At this stage you can customize your soap with various additives. We recommend you experiment with carrier oils (such as almond), you can add up to 5%; or raw materials such as aloe vera, vitamin E, crushed plant material (jojoba or sandalwood - you can add up to 2%.

* Step 6 - Pour your mixture into a mold and leave to set.

* Step 7 - Once your soap has hardened it is ready to use and enjoy! To pop it the soap bar out of the mold, gently press the center. If that fails, put the mold into the freezer for a few minutes and try again.

Supplies for Soap Making

Cocoa butter is manufactured by squeezing the oil and fat from cacao seeds. In cold climates, our skin can get very dry and painful – melt some cocoa butter and add it into our botanical moisturizer base for that extra boost. You can also use cocoa butter to make a body butter (See recipes)! When used in soap making, it makes for a longer lasting and creamier bar with moisturizing properties!

Goat's milk is a wonderful skin nourisher and conditioner. Its high levels of essential proteins, amino acids, vitamin A and vitamin E hydrate and nourish the skin, while its beta-hydroxy acids content works like as a skin conditioner by exfoliating away dead skin cells leaving smooth and radiant skin.

Made with approx. 20 % white soap and 80% vegetable glycerine. The white soap originally has sodium hydroxide (lye is produced when sodium hydroxide is mixed with water) as an emulsifier (to bond the oils and the water). The white soap is then cured for 3-4 weeks during which time the lye reacts with fatty acids and becomes inert. During the curing process the lye dissipates and the total residue in the final product is only approx. 0.1%.
